Almost everyone loves teddy bears and we hope to spread the word that they are fun to knit. Knitted teddy bears are a great way to use up oddments of yarn. As with knitted dolls, you can use whatever thickness of yarn you have available. Just make sure you use at least two sizes smaller needles than recommended on the ball band or for the thickness of yarn you will be using. You want to aim for a good close knit finish to each knitted piece so that 'stretch' is reduced and fibre fill won't show through when teddy (or dolly) has been created. Thicker wool than stated will give a larger toy, finer yarn will give you a smaller more miniature creation.

Adding a dab of essence of lavender oil to the fibre fill used for head and upper body will give your knitted teddy a 'relaxa' factor of 100 - perfect to help little ones drop off to sleep and us bigger folk to unwind... pop some dried lavender into small, roughly made muslin bags, push each bag down into the hands and feet of your teddy before adding the fibre fill. You'll get a scrunchy feel to teddy's paws similar to a bean filled bear but a lovely lavender fragrance will be released each time you squeeze teddy's hand...

Here's a lovely pattern to make friendly little bears using just oddments of whatever yarn you have available. Oddments of self patterning yarn adds a real touch of 'pretty'.
You don't have to be a Knitting Goddess to create these teddies.
And you don't have to trundle, with furrowed brows, through several pages of complicated, long winded instructions on how to make them up. You don't use glue or pipe cleaners or any other 'bits' that make these soft toys very unfriendly for babies or young children or anyone else for that matter.
The pictures below show a few teddies that I've made.
They are pretty basic but I'm not much good at embroidering their features, but having said that I think they are all the more appealing for not being too perfect...
Pattern Skill Level - Learner/Easy and Enjoyable.

Approx sizes are 7" for small bear and 10" for larger bear.
One option has a stitched seam to form the legs (ideal to give to a very young child)
The second option gives teddy two proper legs.
Pattern includes how to add a skirt to make a girl teddy and a scarf for those chilly outdoor days...
Pattern worked in Double Knit Yarn.
For a larger teddy use Aran thickness yarn and 4mm needles. BUT BE WARNED!! You can easily get addicted to knitting these little cuties.

All of the Teddy Bear patterns shown here are knitted on TWO needles and worked as separate pieces then stitched together when all pieces have been made. None of the patterns shown here are worked in the round or on DPNS - I can't knit in the round or use more than two needles so I have made sure that all of these teddy patterns can be made by everyone! If you can cast on, cast off, work in either garter stitch (every row knit) or stocking stitch (1 row knit, 1 row purl) and have basic ability to sew then you will be able to create any one of these bears. I hope you will find a Teddy that you like and will have fun bringing him to life. These tedy bears look wonderful when knitted with modern yarns. Stylecraft Special Double Knit has a very wide range of colours and is perfect for toy making. If you want a more 'snazzy' type teddy then try using one of the multi colour yarns from King Cole or Stylecraft...Either way, happy Teddy knitting :)

A top of the list pattern for best teddy around.
Easy to follow instructions. Knitted on two needles (no knitting in the round) and clear diagrams to help you complete the making up of each bear.

Ted Of The Toy Cupboard
This is a wonderful old Teddy pattern. Knitted in garter stitch, this teddy is an ideal starter project if you are new to knitted teddies and toys. Use whatever yarn you have to hand. Chunky is ideal, if you don't have chunky work with 2 strands of double knit or 3 strands of 4ply throughout the pattern. Use No. 8 (4mm) needles and No. 11's as given in the pattern. A beautiful traditional Ted standing approx 23" tall when finished. ( The approx finished height will vary depending on yarn used)
For a crazy, colourful and zany teddy, choose bright, colourful yarns, using a different shade for each strand or try working with 2 strands of King Cole DK Splash which is just about my favourite yarn of the moment!
